Macclesfield: Sport you've probably never heard of is coming to Mottram Hall

A new racket sport is coming to Mottram Hall, after Cheshire East Council approved a recent planning application.
The luxury hotel, just six miles from Macclesfield town centre, will be introducing Padel.
No, that is not a misspelling of paddle. Padel is a Mexican racket sport, played in pairs on a court smaller than a full-size tennis court.
As a result, the Champneys-owned hotel applied to Cheshire East Council for a 'replacement of tennis court and installation of 3 no. padel courts, erection of customer kiosk, and associated car parking and hard and soft landscaping.'
Now, the plans have been given the go-ahead.
A planning document reads: "The three Padel courts will each measure 20 metres in length, 10 metres in width, and have an enclosure height of 4 metres. A small customer kiosk will be provided as part of the proposed development.
"This is for a member of staff to be on hand to issue equipment and for storage. A small Toilet block is proposed for staff, player, and spectator welfare."
According to Gentleman's Quarterly, three padel courts can fit in one tennis court so many tennis clubs are converting tennis courts to padel courts as it is more profitable for business owners. And the former of that statement is indeed evidenced by the incoming three-for-one switch.
Given pickleball's rise across various venues in Macclesfield, it may not come as a surprise to some to see another alternative North American racket sport take over Mottram Hall.
Construction can now commence.
The courts could be used by the whole community, and would be available to use seven days a week.
