Macclesfield survives culling of Sainsbury's cafés

Supermarket chain Sainsbury's will close 200 of their in-store cafés in April.

Macclesfield is lucky to have survived the cuts, as just 67 Sainsbury's Café's will stay open.

However, nearby Sainsbury's Café's are not as lucky. For every Macclesfield and Hazel Grove staying open, nearby Biddulph's is set to shut.

Macclesfield Sainsbury's and Sainsbury's Café is located on 61 Cumberland Street.

The nationwide culling of Café's move is set to put around 2,000 jobs at risk, with Sainsbury's also announcing plans to close 34 of its less popular hot food counters.

The closures have come as part of new plans aimed at updating the eat-in, takeaway and home delivery selections for customers.

Sainsbury's says it is hoping to open 30 new 'food halls' in 2022, as well as 30 Starbucks coffee shops within supermarkets. It is possible Macclesfield's could benefit from one or both of these new endeavours.

Simon Roberts, Sainsbury's Chief Executive Officer said: "We are totally focused on improving what we can deliver for our customers and at the same time, working hard to make our business simpler.

"As we go through this period of transition, we have taken the difficult decision to close 200 of our cafes next month.

"We have spoken to all colleagues affected by these changes today and are absolutely committed to supporting them in any way we can during this uncertain time.

"Of course, we understand this is very unsettling for our colleagues, but we must keep adapting our business to make sure we are offering customers the best possible food and drink at affordable prices."
