Macclesfield Town Council has praised the efforts of charities and community groups that have worked to "ensure that no child goes hungry during school holidays".

The mayor, Cllr Sarah Bennett-Wake, paid a visit to St Paul's Church, who have distributed over 100 free packed lunches this week, as well as Cheshire Streetwise and CORE, who have also been joining in the effort.

The town council says it has supported many community groups with funding to assist with the immense community effort to feed those in our communities that need help.

Cllr Sarah Bennett-Wake said: "I'm so proud of the Macclesfield community, coming together to support our children and families in need. By offering donations or providing meals you are ensuring no child goes hungry.

"As a teenager I received free school meals, I only just realised why my mum wasn't hungry at teatime, sharing the majority of the food between the rest of the family."

She added: "By providing free school meals in holidays families can afford to top up a card meter or ensure everyone has their share of food. Thank you for your continued kindness."

The town council has also been signposting residents to Cheshire East Council, who have responded by assisting families whose children are eligible for free school meals and need emergency support to access vouchers by calling 0300 123 5012 or emailing [email protected].

Residents who would like to offer their time and volunteer locally can do so by contacting the Council for Voluntary Services in Cheshire East on 01270 763100 / [email protected] or sign up to Cheshire East People Helping People on 0300 123 5034.
