There's a self-employed revolution going on just outside the town centre, happening right under your nose.

(Or under your hair, if you will)

Bamboo Hairdressing is a unique hair salon located on Chester Road.

The business is a space occupied by six self-employed hairdressers, who are tight-knit, to provide a high quality hairdressing experience for Macclesfield.

And even with six hairdressers, they still get fully-booked rather quickly.

Macclesfield Nub News met with Bamboo Hairdressing front of house Ian Hardman to find more about the booming beauty business.

"We launched in October 2022", said Ian.

"We can't believe how quickly it has gone.

"The stylists are all very experienced, well-known throughout Macclesfield and Cheshire. We are like a mini-family really."

Bamboo is a spiritual successor to Mawson / 42 Chestergate hairdressers, staff who met there and worked together for decades came together to create this place.

Stephen Mawson, Gemma Grundy, Ian Boughey, and David Thomas are experienced long-time colleagues who came together to make Bamboo Hairdressing. Richia O'Neill also works at Bamboo.

And the next generation of Macclesfield hairdresser talent can rent chairs, currently being occupied by Ehren Beasley and Keziah Critchlow.

They even have room for more, as there are chair rental options for any interested hair snippers. (Image - Macclesfield Nub News)

Not many salons can say they boast over a hundred years in combined experience, but with their numbers they certainly can.

"It is a completely different set-up to before, but allows the business to remain competitive and successful," explained Ian.

"We're really grateful that clients have followed us here. And we have gained new clients. We are in a great position.

"We are very proud of our space. But there are still some more tweaks that we'd like to do.

"We had a month turnaround from closing the old business to opening the new one, so we are always looking to make more improvements."

"In here, we have so much room to have that space, that conversation that quality time with a client."

And indeed, the space does feel large, but intimate at the same time because of how many hair professionals are working at any given time.

Customers awaiting their hair to be cut are offered a delicious high-end hot drink, and there is stunning murals of nature on the walls to add to the atmosphere.

Whilst 2024 will be a year of improvements, it is also a year of reflection after a whirlwind first 12 months and busy festive period, to see how far Bamboo Hairdressing has come.

"The loyalty from our customers is amazing," explained Ian.

"It is no surprise to me, because the stylists are excellent.

"They all specialise in their own areas, with different techniques, but blended together makes a full package.

"For example, Gemma and Ehren specialise in colouring hair - but they do cut as well.

"And we have completely different clientele, all ages, different styles, we accommodate all.

"A big thank you to the community for their support."
