A former Manchester City footballer is to come to next month's Treacle Market.

Alex Williams, who won the UEFA European Under-18 Championship and UEFA European Under-21 Championship with England, will be at Macclesfield's artisan market between 11 am and 1 pm on Sunday, April 28.

Alex will be between the sticks of the East Cheshire Hospice stall, to help drum up funds for the beloved Macclesfield charity.

Described by fans as 'City Gent', the goalie made 114 appearances across six seasons, between the First and Second Division.

Late last year, he released an autobiography, with a foreword by current City boss Pep Guardiola.

He will be selling this book at the stall, with proceeds going to both the Millbank Drive end-of-life care centre and City in the Community, the Premier League club's charitable arm.

"We are delighted to have Alex Williams at the Treacle Market fundraising for East Cheshire Hospice," said Treacle Market Co-Organiser Becky Thompson.

Alex was invited by Gary Henshaw, who runs the tombola in Macclesfield Indoor Market, and occasionally on Market Place.

Alex was a founding father of community football, which led to the creation of initiatives such as Macclesfield FC's Community Sports Trust.

His book costs £15, with money going towards two charities.

He retired, shortly before the release of his book. after more than 30 years running City in the Community.

One of his last acts was to present the Premier League trophy to then-captain Ilkay Gundogan.

Alex said: "I'm delighted to be helping the Hospice, which is a wonderful cause and another example of great community spirit."

"I was at the Macclesfield branch of the City supporters' club recently and know the town is full of Blues."

Gary said: "Alex is a man of the people and a friend of the stars, as described in his book. Come along and have a chat and raise more funds for the Hospice."

In other news, an 86-year-old man is running the London Marathon for East Cheshire Hospice this month.
