A Macclesfield woman is running this month's London Marathon in memory of a parent.

Lynne Graves, who works as a dental nurse in Macclesfield, will take on the 26.2-mile run on Sunday, April 21.

The lifelong Macclesfield resident will be running for Alzheimer's Society, raising vital funds for them.

"I'm running for them as my mum had Alzheimer's," said Lynne.

"My lovely mum passed away from this cruel disease.

29 people have been generous to donate so far.

"This will by my fifth London Marathon. My first London Marathon was in 2010, and this will be my 14th marathon in total.

"My marathon personal best is four hours and 13 minutes, which I don't think I will get anywhere near this time, as I am fourteen years older for a start!

Lynne, who went to Fallibroome High School, works at a dentist on King Edward Street, has already smashed her fundraising target.

"Thank you very much to those who have donated so far, it is very much appreciated," added Lynne.

"It feels really good, people have been very kind.

"I am a member of Macclesfield Harriers. I have made lots of friends through it and are a great support, there are two of us doing the London Marathon, but fourteen others going down to cheer us on.

"The Alzheimer's Society is an important society to support as they do research, host support groups and have a helpline."

Jess MacKenzie, Alzheimer's Society Regional Fundraiser for Cheshire, said: "It's wonderful that Lynne is running the London Marathon to support Alzheimer's Society. Each hour people generously give to fundraise for us, every event they take part in, every pound they donate, they're making a life-changing difference to people living with dementia."

"Alzheimer's Society provides vital support to people living with dementia, funds groundbreaking research and campaigns to make dementia the priority it should be. Together, we will end the devastation caused by dementia.

"There are over 900,000 people living with dementia in the UK. But we simply can't reach everyone without the continued support of our incredible fundraisers like Lynne."

Lynne is currently deciding what her new fundraising target will be, having met her initial goal before she has even reached the race starting line.

"I love running marathons, it gives me a great sense of achievement, though I don't like the training," she confessed.

Her advice for those on the fence about doing a marathon for charity is 'to join Macc Harriers'.

Lynne with fellow Macc Harrier and local London Marathon entrant Harry Newton.

"Anyone can achieve it, just take it slowly," said Lynne.

Beyond London, Lynne would love to do a fundraiser marathon abroad, having previously enjoyed the Rome Marathon.

The Alzheimer's Society has been contacted for comment.

Other Maxonians taking on the London Marathon include Louise Jennings, who is running for Cardiac Risk in the Young, Lynne's friend Harry Newton, who is running for East Cheshire Hospice, and six people for The Rossendale Trust.
