MP's Column - 'When Keir walks out of Downing Street he can hold his head high'
By Tim Roca MP 22nd Jun 2026
Today Keir Starmer announced he's stepping down as Prime Minister.
We live in a world where social media turns everything into a pile-on, and where people in public life face a level of personal hostility that frankly puts a lot of good people off ever standing for office.
Behind the title Prime Minister is a person. A husband and a father who gave this job everything he had.
There have been real achievements for our area. 1,000 Macclesfield kids lifted out of poverty. AstraZeneca investing £100 million in our town, an investment Keir helped secure through the UK's trade deal with the United States.
He kept his word to my constituent Figen Murray - passing Martyn's Law in memory of her son, killed in the Manchester Arena bombing.
And when the pressure was on over Iran, he made an unpopular call and kept Britain out of the war that followed. Most people now recogise it was the right thing to do.
I've never pretended everything has been perfect, and I'm not going to start now. The cost of living is still hitting people in Macclesfield hard, and that has to be front and centre for whoever comes next.
When Keir walks out of Downing Street he can hold his head high. He served this country with decency and with courage.
I wish him, Vic and their children all the very best.
