New bar opens in Macclesfield's iconic Castle Quarter
A new micropub has opened in Macclesfield.
The Earl of Mercia, located where Dejour used to be on Church Street, has more than ten beers on tap served at cold temperatures.
It is a co-venture between Macclesfield resident Anthony Greaves and his pal Tom Casom.
"The Earl of Mercia is what we call a 'full tap house'," said Anthony.
"We serve a top-of-the-range selection of beers, complimenting an alternative range.
"We have a lot of beers you can't get on tap elsewhere in Macc like Fruhli or Victoria Malaga.
"We are a friendly local. And we like to support local as well. We have two Beartown Brewery IPAs on tap, and sell their bottles as well.
"We sell spirits and wines, as well as alcohol-free options with Erdinger and Leffe. There's also a coffee offering as well."
The bar takes its name from the 11th century Maxonian, who held Macclesfield before the Norman Conquest, and would die five years later.
The Earl of Mercia owned our town when Macclesfield was famously valued at £8. The Earl was the brother-in-law of King Harold II, the UK's last Anglo-Saxon king.
The historic company name adds prestige to the business, which is complimented by the premium range of beers that they sell.
Co-Owner Anthony settled on the name as he loves Macclesfield for its history.
The bar has 18 seats downstairs, along with six seats upstairs plus six benches that can sit larger parties.
There is also an outdoor area which will be opened at a later date, that can seat 40.
"I have owned a bar in Macclesfield before, but became attracted to the space here as it has so much potential with the outdoor space," Anthony added.
"We want to get local art on the walls and support live music here."
And as well as the live arts scene, other small independent businesses have benefitted from the new bar, with a stunning piece of elegant outdoor signage completed by local sign artist and Macclesfield College graduate James Braddock.
Anthony has been in Macclesfield for seven years, and literally lives round the corner from his new bar.
He enjoys Macclesfield for its unique identity.
"I've never seen Macclesfield as a big name high street place," he explained.
"Macc is going to go the way of more independent. I've always classed Macc as that, and we're seeing more of that now.
"People enjoy businesses for the people behind it. And we want to offer that friendliness with The Earl of Mercia. We're proud to be an independent business.
"I love Church Street as it is the most photogenic street in Macclesfield. For me, this street [and the whole Castle Quarter] is what Macclesfield is. I love it.
"I've loved running here so far. It is great to work alongside a really close friend of mine, and we've had lots of repeat customers who want to try all the range.
"Thank you to everyone for your support so far, and if you haven't come yet, we look forward to welcoming you."
The new bar is on 15 Church Street, next to Pachamama.
They are open 12-12 seven days a week.
They will hope to hire more staff in the near future.
