A Macclesfield gym has just celebrated their eighth birthday.

CrossFit MaxOn, which is now Macclesfield's only CrossFit gym, takes their name from the term 'Maxonian' and the motivational phrase 'getting your max on'.

The business has previously had sites near Victoria Park on Fence Avenue, but has now settling at a the Sunrise Business Park on Hulley Road.

It was started by friends Sally Gilliver and Łukasz Majewski.

"Our gym is open 24/7," said Łukasz.

"There are two training rooms - one is where classes are held and the other is an open gym area where members with the unlimited membership package can do their own training.

"We have three core staff members who teach six classes per day during the week (three in the morning and three in the evening).

"The CrossFit methodology is about creating all-round fitness in cardio, gymnastics and weightlifting.

They have three classes in the morning from 6am, and three classes in the evening. 12 people are in each class. (Image - Alexander Greensmith / Macclesfield Nub News)

"CrossFit is a utilitarian sport. We use free-weights such as dumbbells, kettlebells, and barbells. The only machines we use are rowers and air bikes.

"I love CrossFit as it is exciting and different every day. Our friendly and supportive community is second to none.

"We are a group of like-minded people who enjoy socialising outside of the gym as much as training together.

"The workouts never get boring… we run, we row, we bike, we lift, we do gymnastics. There is always something you can improve on."

Their class size is small, but that is to offer regular feedback to improve form, performance and reduce risk of injury. (Image - Alexander Greensmith / Macclesfield Nub News)

The name CrossFit comes from the term 'cross-discipline fitness', representing the intensity and diversity of the workout.

You can register for free CrossFit MaxOn sessions on their website.

"Me and my business partner Sally met at a [non-CrossFit] gym in Macclesfield that I used to work at," Łukasz added.

"She was a member turned-coach, I was a coach. We started CrossFit at a similar time and both enjoyed it so much that we opened CrossFit MaxOn together.

"We are the only CrossFit gym in Macc. There are now CrossFit gyms in Congleton and Buxton too.

"We always encourage people to do a taster class. Classes normally have just one coach but if you are new to CrossFit, we sometimes have another coach working with you individually. We do this so the person feels more comfortable during their first session.

"Our members are 50/50 male/female, range in age from teens to 60+ and are of varied ability.

"CrossFit is all about adaptability, making it accessible to everyone, but also giving you the opportunity to challenge yourself.

"To those who are new to exercising, we can offer a one-to-one beginner's session of 60-90 minutes, so they feel more comfortable and confident before joining the main classes.

"On Saturday morning, we also run CrossFit Kids for ages six and over which is very popular."

CrossFit is Sally and Łukasz's passion and their aim is to deliver a quality, fun and safe environment.

"Our classes are limited to 12 people to enable the coach to spend a good amount of time with each member," he explained.

They donated £200 for Royal Manchester Children's Charity in October. (Image - Alexander Greensmith / Macclesfield Nub News)

"We demonstrate all movements and offer feedback when required. We make sure everyone is moving safely and optimally.

"The training plan is always displayed on the whiteboard so you can keep up.

"During our classes, you can switch off after a busy day at work, and allow our coaches to motivate you, within a group of fun and friendly people.

"I used to attend corporate gyms which I always found boring and I felt anonymous. Here at MaxOn, that is not the case. People chat with each other and you feel inclusive."

They even sell merchandise to their most devoted members. (Image - Alexander Greensmith / Macclesfield Nub News)

CrossFit is a fitness brand which was set up in California in the year 2000. There are over 12,000 CrossFit gyms in the world.

Macclesfield's sole CrossFit gym benefits from plenty of parking spaces, and a motivational music playlist to get you in the mood.

"I am originally from Poland but have lived in the UK for over 12 years," he said.

"I like Macclesfield as the people are really nice. I even met my wife here - we have been married for three years.

You don't have to, but the coaches and some members even have their own weightgear weighing 7-10kg. This is inspired by armour from warfare, which adds to the superhuman feeling that CrossFit can bring. (Image - Alexander Greensmith / Macclesfield Nub News)

"For all my staff, this is our passion. We put our hearts and souls into this and have done since day one.

"That's a big thing that sets us apart from the corporate gyms. CrossFit MaxOn is a huge part of my life and it is so rewarding.

"In the future, we'd like to have a few more coaches. And of course, welcome some new members as well.

"It is great to meet new people. We have a lot of drop-ins from people who are visiting Macclesfield and come here just because we are a CrossFit gym.
