Ever fancied becoming a DJ?

Proper Sound on Chestergate is gearing up to host the first of its new DJ School sessions.

Open to people of all ages, the class will be led by two local DJs, with vinyl taught by Oscar Trevena and digital by Ben Vincent.

Oscar said: "It's about giving people a chance to come in, have a go and enjoy music without pressure.

"You don't need any experience – it's just about getting started and building confidence."

The DJ School project is the first project by Unknown Macc CIC, a new community interest company aiming to use music to bring people together, reduce isolation, build confidence and support mental wellbeing.

Also in the works is an Ian Curtis audio walking tour, guiding visitors through key locations in the town's musical history.

By creating a structured experience, Unknown Macc hopes to attract fans from across the UK and internationally, increasing footfall and supporting local businesses.

Over time, the organisation hopes to grow into further heritage and community projects, which may include public art, small exhibition spaces and grassroots platforms for emerging musicians.

The first DJ School class will take place on Thursday, April 9, from 6pm to 9pm.

It will serve as a taster session, giving participants the chance to try both vinyl and digital DJing in small groups.

The sessions are designed not just to teach a skill, but to create a space where people can connect, meet others and feel part of something, while also helping to build confidence, focus and motivation.

As part of the CIC's focus on accessibility, a number of supported places are available for those who would benefit from the wellbeing side of the sessions.

Spaces for the first session are limited and can be booked online here.

Looking to the future, there are plans to introduce one-to-one DJ School sessions.

The team is also exploring a future fundraiser to support a dedicated under-16s DJ night, helping create a safe space and platform for younger people to get involved in music.
