No by-elections despite multiple vacant Macclesfield councillor seats
There will be no by-elections despite two councillors vacating their positions in local government in Macclesfield.
Macclesfield Hurdsfield Labour representative Cllr Stephen Carter passed away in late December, meanwhile Macclesfield Tytherington Independent Cllr Lloyd Roberts resigned in late November.
Carter was a Cheshire East Councillor. Meanwhile Roberts sat as both a Cheshire East and Macclesfield Town Councillor.
Responding to a Macclesfield Nub News request for comment, a spokesperson for Cheshire East Council said: "The law states that, where a vacancy in the office of councillor occurs within six months of a scheduled election (due on 4 May 2023), there shall be no by-election to fill that vacancy.
"Discussions will take place among officers and elected members as to how any ward-related issues might be dealt with until the outcome of May's borough elections."
Macclesfield Town Council - for which Cllr Lloyd Roberts also sat on - did not respond to comment.
This means that the two Cheshire East seats will remain vacant until the new Cheshire East Council elections in May, when every Cheshire East seat will come up for grabs.
The future of the Macclesfield Town Council seat remains unclear. A document on the vacant Tytherington seat currently redirects to last year's Broken Cross and Upton Ward by-election.
