This September, Macclesfield FC sit top of their league. But September hasn't always been a great month for Macclesfield fans in recent years.

In September 2020 the old club Macclesfield Town wound up, and perhaps an equally dark day occurred a few years earlier.

Three years ago today on September 26 2018, ex-club Macclesfield Town suffered an embarrassing 8-0 loss to a rampant West Ham United side.

The Silkmen did well to have the first shot on target against the Premier League opposition, and held the Hammers to a clean sheet for 28 minutes.

However, Michail Antonio, Robert Snodgrass and Lucas Pérez goals led to a 3-0 lead for the London club at half-time.

The latter two would bag another against Macc, and Grady Diagbanna would later also get two.

Ryan Fredericks and Angelo Ogbonna rounded out the scoresheet. Macc did well against a first-team Hammers side, coached by Premier League winner Manuel Pellegrini.

Macc Town - who were then in League Two - had a squad which included current Macclesfield FC boss Danny Whitaker.

Our town's former football club had just 20% possession.

They took six shots to West Ham's 24, with the Premier League club converting a third of them.

Macc Town managed just 201 passes, to their opponents 773.

It was a tough watch for Silks fans, and the misery continued after the game online.

Football fans from all over the world were ridiculing the club, who were in dire financial state at the time.

The performance even reached Germany, where clubs reported similar high scores in their version of the League Cup on social media.

World-renowned club Bayern Leverkusen even tweeted "Wait, what's a Macclesfield?" in hilarious scenes.

The viral tweet was a further gutpunch to a club already in freefall that ended up with the collapse of the team two years later.

After the League Club loss, Mark Yates left Macclesfield Town just 12 days later on October 8.

Thankfully, our town's phoenix club Macclesfield FC is rewriting Macc's legacy after the old club's drubbing by West Ham.
