Opening date and location for Macclesfield's first-ever repair café announced
Details for Macclesfield's upcoming repair café have been confirmed.
While Cheshire towns like Wilmslow and Chester have had repair café's since 2019, it will be the first time one will open in Macclesfield. This is despite plans going as far back as 2018.
Their Roe Street premises will open in September 2021, inside plastic-free shop Scoop and Scales, who share a similar ethos.
A repair café is where people gather to work on repairing household objects like bicycles, clothing, electronics and mechanical devices.
The idea is to promote using pre-existing items rather than buying a new one, which would impact the environment.
For example, repairing a torn dress instead of buying a new one would be better for the environment than purchasing the fast-fashion dress which has likely travelled thousands of miles from Asia.
As COVID-19 restrictions are slowly easing, Macclesfield Repair Café have confirmed an opening date of September 11.
"On 11th September the Repair Café will open its doors for the first time to the public! None of this would have been possible without Scoop and Scales who have kindly taken us under their umbrella," said the three organisers of the initiative.
Macclesfield's Repair Café is planning to open once a month from 10am - 2pm in the Old Sunday School Building, also known as the Heritage Centre.
"We have a great team of skilled volunteers who are keen to help visitors with their repairs and share their knowhow," organisers added.
"With a wide range of expertise from textiles, IT, bikes, mechanical and electrical engineering, we are hoping that the Repair Café will become a place of knowledge exchange and discovery for our community."
Local environmental organisation Macctastic are also supporting the drop-in repair service.
