Overhanging tree creating 'safety issue' at new pedestrian crossing

A pedestrian crossing installed nine months ago in Macclesfield isn't operational because the traffic lights are obscured by overhanging tree foliage, Cheshire East has said.

Cllr Chris O'Leary (Sutton, Con) asked at the recent meeting of the full council when the crossing on London Road at Lyme Green would be working.

"Many residents on the new development at Bollin Grange need to cross the London Road to access the primary school, for the community park and other community facilities," he said.

Cllr Mark Goldsmith (Ind), chair of the highways and transport committee, said: "The new traffic signals have been installed by the developer, rather than by Cheshire East Highways, and they are ready to be switched on, but there is currently a privately-owned tree obscuring visibility to one of the signal heads, which presents a safety issue.

"We have contacted the developer who is leading on these discussions with the landowner for a response."

Cllr Goldsmith said if they didn't get a response soon, the council would cut back the overhanging vegetation.

"However, it is something we have to allow the landowner adequate time to do themselves before we charge them for the work," he said.

"So, in answer to your question, it should be the coming month or so."

Speaking after the meeting, Cllr O'Leary told the Local Democracy Reporting Service: "When they consulted me and parish council about 18 months ago, we said, you do know there's a tree in the way!"
