Photographer Kevin Cummins - who took the iconic 1979 shot of Ian Curtis now painted on a Macclesfield street - has praised our town's new mural.

This follows the completion of the Ian Curtis mural depicting a performance of the late Joy Division performer, which was officially unveiled on 86 Mill Street on Saturday March 26.

The Macclesfield-raised musician is holding a microphone and gazing away from the lens, in a snap captured by Kevin Cummins at Joy Division gig.

43 years after the photographer took the left-facing image of the Macclesfield Joy Division frontman, Cummins' work of Curtis has been immortalised into the new Mill Street art by Manchester artist Akse.

The mural is based on a photograph taken by Kevin Cummins at The Factory/Russell Club in Hulme, Manchester on July 13 1979.

"I love Akse19's work," said Kevin.

"This is the second time we've collaborated and the result is stunning.

"It's great to have a couple of my photos around the town now (the other is on the Railway Station bridge).

"Macclesfield is the perfect place to celebrate Ian's legacy too."

Shortly after speaking with Macclesfield Nub News, Cummins tweeted "Blimey. Good turnout in Macc today for the official unveiling of the Ian Curtis street art piece."

Akse has previously painted a mural of a Cummins photograph of Ian Curtis on Port Street in Manchester.

The image was taken ten months before Curtis passed away in his Macclesfield home on Barton Street.

On the day of the photograph, the setlist was as follows:

  1. Dead Souls
  2. The Only Mistake
  3. Insight
  4. Candidate
  5. Wilderness
  6. She's Lost Control
  7. Shadowplay
  8. Disorder
  9. Interzone
  10. Atrocity Exhibition
Encore:
  1. Novelty
  2. Transmission

Kevin Cummins is one of the best known photographers associated with Joy Division, who had two members from Macclesfield.
