A former office could be turned into housing.

Plans have been submitted to Cheshire East Council for the change of use of 108 Chestergate, previously home to Choice Translations.

If approved, the unit will undergo several alterations to be converted into a four-bedroom house in multiple occupation.

"The application building is currently vacant and its poor visual appearance detracts substantially from both the conservation area and the adjoining listed building," reads a heritage statement included in the application.

"The proposed alterations, particularly to the font elevation, are sympathetic to the host and would significantly enhance the overall appearance of the building and the area as a whole."

It adds: "The proposal would also provide affordable residential units with good access to a range of services and facilities within Macclesfield town centre, thereby contributing to local housing supply.

"Public benefits, both economic, social and environmental would accrue as a result, which also weigh in favour of the scheme."

The proposals submitted involve the demolition of a single storey rear extension, with this area to be used as a shared yard with bin and cycle storage.

Internal alterations would be made to create a living, dining and kitchen area on the ground floor, with bedrooms and en-suite areas on the two floors above.

Meanwhile, the existing shop front would be replaced with a new timber painted door and windows designed to match the neighbouring property, 106 Chestergate.

The application adds: "Overall, the proposal would sustain and enhance the setting of the site.

"The design is traditional and would be constructed with a sensitively selected pallet of materials.

"The proposal is an appropriate redevelopment of the site which contributes to the architectural quality of the area.

"Notwithstanding any heritage value attributed to the site, it is currently having a negative impact on the local area and therefore finding an appropriate viable and sustainable use for this brownfield land is of paramount importance."

Cheshire East validated the application on Wednesday, July 30.

The public have until Wednesday, September 3, to share their views.
