An elderly woman was left with 'serious injuries' following an alleged attack in Macclesfield.

Police have arrested an 87-year-old man on suspicion of assault.

It comes after emergency services were called to reports of a 'domestic incident' on Earlsway on Friday (August 1).

Arriving at the scene at around 9am, officers found an 86-year-old woman who had sustained serious injuries.

She was subsequently taken to Macclesfield District General Hospital.

Meanwhile, an 87-year-old man was arrested at the address on suspicion of assault.

He has since been released on conditional bail.
