Plans to turn a former Macclesfield nightclub into apartments have been turned down once again.

Cheshire East Council has refused an application that would have seen The Cave on Mill Street partially demolished and turned into 10 one-bedroom apartments.

According to the decision notice, dated September 7, the proposals would not result in a 'good standard of internal amenity' due to the lack of outlook and natural light.

The notice adds that there has been 'insufficient information' submitted to assess the impact of noise from existing surrounding venues on future residents.

Furthermore, it is said that the proposed dormer windows would 'compromise the integrity' of the original roof structure, seen as a key element of the building's historic character.

A report recommending the plans be refused adds: "There is a clear presumption that development within settlements should be approved unless the benefits of doing so would be substantially outweighed by any adverse effects.

"In this regard, substantial weight can be given to the more efficient use of a vacant and underutilised building.

"Substantial weight can also be given to the benefits of providing homes which will contribute towards meeting the council's housing land supply.

"However, whilst the weight to be attached to these benefits of the proposal are acknowledged, it is not considered that these outweigh the identified harm to the living conditions of future occupiers, the potential impact upon existing businesses and the heritage harm."

Cheshire East Council refused a similar application for the site in 2024, with the subsequent appeal dismissed.
