Macclesfield Nub News has learned there is an opportunity for Bollington household waste recycling centre (HWRC) to stay open, albeit for only a short amount of time.
In an email shared with Macclesfield Nub News, Cheshire East Council has contacted the Town Councils of the three tips they wish to close.
These are in Bollington, Poynton and Middlewich. And Cheshire East Council's correspondence with Bollington Town Council has been shared with Macclesfield Nub News.
It reveals that there is the option for Bollington Household Waste Recycling Centre to remain open, for the next ten months.
However, it would mean the Town Council would have to put up a lump sum of £59,400.
This payment would keep Bollington tip open until April 1 2025, which is the start of the next financial year.
Cheshire East Council emailed Bollington Town Council and their Councillors about this offer on Friday May 10.
The larger form of local government gave the smaller form of local government just 11 days, or seven working days to reply.
This is despite the fact that the next Bollington Town Council meeting where it could be discussed, would be after the deadline.
As a result, an emergency meeting is likely to be set for just hours before the deadline.
Macclesfield Nub News contacted Cheshire East Council for comment regarding the one week deadline of the ten month Bollington tip offer.
Bollington Town Councillor John Stewart said: "The worst case scenario is that we keep it open for ten months, and it never reopens again."
"I think if we allow it to be mothballed, it will never be open again.
"But if we keep it going, for six grand a month, I think there's a chance we can find a way for it to stay open after April 1 2025].
In a bid to balance their books, Cheshire East Council has called the trio of tip cuts an 'emergency reduction of household waste recycling centres'.
£75,000 would be saved by closing Bollington HWRC over a financial year, but as we are already two months into the next financial year, it appears a lower amount has been offered to potentially keep the tip open for another ten months.
The remaining recycling centres if Bollington, Poynton and Middlewich were to close, would be in Alsager, Crewe, Macclesfield and Knutsford.
Earlier this month, Cheshire East Council launched a consultation on the threatened sites, offering the options of:
- All HWRCs remain open as they are now.
- Poynton HWRC is closed.
- Bollington HWRC is closed.
- Bollington, Middlewich and Poynton HWRCs are closed.
The consultation can be filled in HERE until June 16.
"What we need from the public is to respond to the Cheshire East consultation and raise support for this vital public service in Bollington," added John.
Bollington Town Council said: "We cannot comment at this stage as the Council has not met to discuss it."
According to this consultation, the 2023/24 budget for delivering Household Waste Recycling Centre Service is approximately £4 million.
Of the seven Cheshire East sites still active, Bollington tip ranked 5th for the highest amount of tonnage throughput tonnes in 2022/23, with 2,442 tonnes, or 8.8% of the borough wide tonnage total. (Source)
