North West water company, United Utilities, is offering help and advice to residents and businesses in Cheshire to protect their water pipes and avoid bursts and flooding during the cold spell.

The company says when water freezes, it expands and puts more pressure on pipes and joints which can cause them split or pull apart.

"As the water in the pipe thaws, water can then pour through the damaged pipe, flooding into properties," said a spokesperson.

They are encouraging homes and businesses to think 'prepare, insulate, protect'. Their advice is:

  • Prepare - know where your stop tap is and check it works. It's usually under the kitchen sink they say but but can also be in garages or cellars. Have a number of a plumber at hand or check if a water pipe leak or burst is covered on your home or business insurance
  • Insulate - insulate pipes in cold places like outside and in the garage and loft. Insulating hot water pipes will also prevent heat from escaping and help save money on your energy bills
  • Protect - any other exposed equipment, such as outside taps with an insulated cover

Rob Moore, who heads up water services for United Utilities in Cheshire said: "When temperatures drop, pipes that aren't insulated can freeze and this can cause them to block, or even crack which can cause flooding.

"Customers can take a few simple steps which will go a long way to helping them avoid any nasty burst pipes and all the inconvenience and repair costs that this brings."

United Utilities has advice here on what to do if you have burst pipe and how to protect your home this winter.
