A retired teacher explores Macclesfield through 50 buildings in his new book.

Local resident Christopher Ian Tatlock is celebrating the release of his first published book, Macclesfield in 50 Buildings.

The 70-year-old saw it as the perfect of combining his three hobbies – photography, architecture and writing.

He said: "I wanted to document and preserve these beautiful Macclesfield buildings through photography, and my book contains the pictures I took with my trusty Nikon, during two long walks around town, in the summer of 2020.

"These were later supplemented by numerous extra walks in the years that followed.

"The route of my wander and much of the information presented here was guided by and taken from the Cheshire volume of Nikolaus Pevsner's magnificent, 'Buildings of England' series, first published in 1971 and revised by Matthew Hyde and Clare Hartwell in 2011."

Ian was born and grew up in Worsley, Salford.

He taught in East London between 1978 and 1990, before moving to Macclesfield to live whilst teaching in Wilmslow for the last 24 years of his career.

His new book, Macclesfield in 50 Buildings, discusses the history and architecture of 50 of the town's more eminent and attractive buildings.

It is split into four main sections  - churches and chapels, public buildings, mills, and other buildings.

The final chapter, 'Macclesfield in Another 50 Buildings', features a list of other significant buildings that couldn't be accommodated into the main body of the book.

It is illustrated with 110 colour photographs spread across 96 pages.

Asked his favourite building in Silktown, Ian said: "I find that really hard to answer but it's either The Drill Hall on Bridge Street, Armoury Towers at The Militia Barracks on Crompton Road, or The Pavilions at the former Parkside Asylum on Victoria Road."

He added: "I don't like to sound big headed but although I say it myself, I think it's a very good photographic record of the buildings of Macclesfield."

Macclesfield in 50 Buildings was released on August 15.

It can be purchased through the publisher's website here.
