Service and exhibition planned to mark 80th anniversary of VJ Day in Macclesfield

Eighty years have passed since Japan announced its surrender, signalling the end of the Second World War.
Macclesfield Town Council will mark the 80th anniversary of VJ Day with a short service at St Michael's on Friday, August 15.
The Mayor of Macclesfield, councillor Emma Gilma, will lead a two-minute silence at midday.
"We hope that you will join us as we pay tribute to all those who served in the Far East and the Pacific," said a spokesperson for the council.
St Michael's will also be hosting an exhibition entitled 'VJ Day – Eight Years On'.
Created by Macclesfield resident and artist Trevor Duce, the exhibition depicts the atomic bombing of Hiroshima.
It will feature the stories of soldiers from Macclesfield who fought in Japan, information about the bombing and details of life after the explosion.
The Mayor of Macclesfield will officially open the exhibition at 10am on Friday.
Visitors will have until 3pm on Friday, August 22, to view the exhibition.
