Olympic gold medal cyclist Sir Chris Hoy MBE is to officially the new premises of the Macclesfield Samaritans branch next month.

The move to the King Edward Street premises will mark a new chapter for the charity which has operated in the town since 1963 with a current team of over 90 volunteers who respond to over 20,000 calls and emails a year as well as facilitating other programs.

With a move to new premises already tabled for 2020, the project commenced prior to the Covid-19 pandemic taking hold.

As vulnerable volunteers shielded and call volumes increased considerably, the move progressed steadily, albeit with the branch under significant pressure.

"I am immensely proud of how all our volunteers have contributed during this unprecedented period," said branch director, George Blackledge. "Whether ensuring the call rota is filled or preparing the new building for the rest of the team, everyone has played their part throughout."

The current premises in Boden Street were opened by Princess Alexandra in 1990 and described at the time as "making [the Macclesfield branch] one of the most fortunate in the country," thanks to it being purpose built to the branch's specifications.

Mr Blackledge said: "Although our current location has served us well, the new premises at King Edward Street provide a more flexible layout, better accessibility and a more supportive environment for our volunteers."

Sir Chris will open the branch alongside a small invited guest list, with the entire event being conducted with strict adherence to Covid-19 guidelines.

"Whilst the current situation has made the relocation a little more challenging, we intend to mark the occasion with a low key opening ceremony that will provide a few of our generous supporters and partners the opportunity to see our new premises," explains Blackledge.

"Prior to this, all our volunteers will have received a personal tour and induction, ready to take calls, and, when conditions allow, meet face-to-face with people as well."

Macclesfield is one of over 200 Samaritans branches across the UK that together offer 24/7 support for anyone who is struggling to cope, or who needs someone to listen without judgement or pressure.

The branch's outreach work forms part of the organisation's goal of being there not only for the moment of crisis, but to prevent the crisis, giving people ways to cope and skills to be there for others.

With the new building's fit out completed by Tailored Office Solutions, signage installed by Tunnicliffe Signs and LSG Cheshire and further services provided by Macclesfield Lock & Safe, A1 Cleaning Services and Francis Fire Protection Services, Samaritans of Macclesfield & District also received generous support from local furniture store Arighi Bianchi.

The Samaritans charity shop, located in Pickford Street accounts for a substantial part of the local branch's annual income and its closure throughout lockdown had a significant impact on funds.

Mr Blackledge said: "We are grateful to the efforts of our volunteers, all donations received and to the work provided by our contractors in moving to the new premises".
