A Macclesfield dance school is encouraging boys to dance.

Sylk Dance Academy are offering local schools a free breakdance workshop for boys in years four to six.

Principal and founder Amy Mayers is hoping to challenge any preconceptions of dance being predominantly for girls.

She said: "There can be a stigma attached to dance being more of a girls hobby but luckily this has been diminished a lot over the years with us seeing so many successful male dancers and choreographers in the media.

"Boys now have more role models in the performing arts than ever before and we love for them to feel welcome and represented at our dance studio."

She added: "We have four male dance teachers at our studio who are fantastic role models and have experience in all areas of dance from contemporary to breakdance.

"One of our male teachers is a former breakdance world champion and another is a former student of ours."

Amy has two sons, 12-year-old Oscar and three-year-old Kit, both of whom have found a love for dancing.

"From a parents' perspective dance can be such an asset to your child's development and brings opportunities to learn valuable life skills," Amy said.

"If your son is taking an interest in music & movement, or just has bags of energy, dancing can be a fantastic outlet physically and creatively."

One of Sylk's many success stories is Sam Goodwin's son Monty, who started dancing at the age of four.

Seven years later, Monty now takes 10 dance classes a week across a range of styles as well as participating in competitions around the UK.

"It became very much his happy place," said Sam.

"He made many friends and his skills and confidence grew, not to mention his fitness levels.

"Monty has also moved out of his comfort zone to do contemporary dance with a class of mainly girls and he holds his own, continuing to grow in technique and confidence.

"Dancing makes Monty incredibly happy and Sylk is his home from home.

"He is inspired every day by the amazing teachers who have supported him every step of his journey."
