Wright & Morten Vets warn pet owners of major change affecting travel taking effect this week
By Matthew Hancock-Bruce 20th Apr 2026
A major change impacting how pets can travel abroad will take effect this week.
From Wednesday, April 22, if your main residence is in Great Britain, but you are travelling to the EU with your pet using an EU Pet Passport, this EU pet passport will no longer be valid for travel, the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA) has announced.
Your pet will need an Animal Health Certificate instead.
DEFRA states that 'EU pet passports may only be issued to owners whose main residence is within the European Union' but one major provider (Le Shuttle) has said they will not change their control procedures.
Vet Pete Andrew, of Wright & Morten in Macclesfield, said: "There are no details how this will change will be enforced and the picture is not at all clear.
"It's especially frustrating that this is being implemented with just a few days' notice".
Wright & Morten Vets can issue Animal Health Certificates at their Macclesfield, Wilmslow and Congleton branches and have reduced the price of our Animal Health Certificates in response to this change.
Animal Health Certificates must be issued within 10 days of your date of travel to the EU.
