A 'jellybean-sized' piece of technology is helping to save lives.

Patients at Macclesfield District General Hospital are benefiting from an innovative diagnostic procedure known as Colon Capsule Endoscopy (CCE) - a minimally invasive alternative to traditional colonoscopy.

Introduced in December 2024, CCE uses a capsule roughly the size of a jellybean, containing a tiny camera that captures thousands of images as it travels through the bowel.

These images help clinicians detect conditions such as polyps or bowel cancer earlier and more efficiently.

Consultant Dr Konrad Koss said: "CCE is a significant advancement in bowel diagnostics.

"It is a great example of how we're using technology to improve patient experience and outcomes.

"The capsule's small size and non-invasive nature make it an ideal option for patients who may not tolerate traditional procedures.

"It's a safe, effective option that's already making a difference, and we hope patients and GPs across East Cheshire will become more aware of it."

Patients attend a clinic appointment lasting around 45 minutes, during which they swallow the capsule containing two cameras.

As the capsule moves through the bowel, it transmits photographs and video to a small data recorder worn on the patient's waist.

The capsule is naturally excreted and flushed away, while the recorder is returned to the hospital for analysis.

CCE is particularly useful for patients who may not be suitable for standard colonoscopy, offering a more comfortable experience without the need for sedation or recovery time. It also supports efforts to improve access to bowel screening and reduce waiting times.

Patient George Tornetta shared his experience with capsule endoscopy, describing it as a major improvement over the traditional procedure.

He said: "Having previously had a colonoscopy, I found the capsule endoscopy to be a significant improvement.

"The procedure was amazing — much less invasive, far more comfortable, and a much better overall experience.
