The Silkmen urge fans to 'Speak Your Mind' for Mental Health Awareness Week

By James Kelly 21st May 2020

With the world engulfed within the coronavirus pandemic, Mental Health Awareness week has assumed added significance this year as Macclesfield Town FC join with the EFL's charity partner and urge you to #SpeakYourMind.

During these unprecedented times, we worry about ourselves, our loved ones and all the things that we hold most dear to us.

This is clearly exemplified by the effects of social distancing which also gives rise to feelings of isolation, helplessness and anxiety on multiple levels.

Yet we can and we will get through this and we will do it together.

Macclesfield Town are therefore delighted to be able to join with Mind and play our part in helping change the narrative surrounding mental health.

This year, the chosen angle is an incredibly poignant one as it encourages us all to speak our minds.

No matter what consumes our thoughts, it is imperative that we talk to the people closest to us - now more than ever.

It may be that you are worried about where your next wage slip is coming from, or health concerns which have spiralled due to the onset of the global pandemic. It may be worries about your family, friends or things which matter to you and have a special place in your heart.

It may be that social distancing has elicited very real feelings of loneliness and you just need to hear a friendly voice.

Whatever is going through your mind at the minute, your voice must be heard.

Looking after your mental health is just as important as your physical health - in fact, many argue that by maintaining a healthy mind you actually become infinitely more empowered to deal with any other obstacles which are put in your way.

Conversely, we all have either first-hand experience or know of people who have suffered with a mental illness when things have got a little bit much to deal with on our own.

The whole premise behind breaking the stigma surrounding mental health problems is that nobody should feel that they have to deal with them alone.

It is true that sometimes we have set-backs - we try to open up to people who are not receptive to our suffering or we place too much faith in organisations that outwardly champion the mental health cause.

This can have wide-ranging and long-term effects - yet just like in every battle, you have to persevere. You have to keep believing that you can change your own destiny in a positive manner and crucially, that you are worth the fight.

Although we have to be distanced in a physical sense within the current climate, there really has never been a better time for us to unite and speak our minds. In this sense, we can become closer than we have ever been and rise up united in order to banish the stigma surrounding mental illness for good.

So we urge all our loyal supporters to look after yourselves, your loved ones and all the things that you hold dear as we urge you to #SpeakYourMind.
