Campaigners have welcomed Cheshire East's decision to oppose the Adlington new town plans.

On Wednesday, December 10, councillors voted unanimously to oppose plans for a new town of up to 20,000 homes.

Organised by the Supporters of the Adlington Greenbelt group, around 90 protestors attended the meeting at Tatton Park, applauding the council's decision.

Speaking after the vote, campaigner Mark Hadfield said: "The joint Notice of Motion, passed unanimously by all councillors, demonstrates that Cheshire East speaks with one voice.

"Over 10,000 people have come together to oppose the Adlington New Town plans, and Supporters of the Adlington Greenbelt are delighted with this outcome.

"We also acknowledge the strong support of our local MP, Tim Roca, in standing against these proposals."

Mark continued: "We recognise that this is just the beginning of a long campaign, but we are united in sending a clear message to the Secretary of State and central government.

"We will not accept the destruction of our greenbelt or our heritage in the name of Adlington New Town."

The motion calling on the council to formally object to the Adlington new town proposal was jointly submitted by Cllr Fiona Wilson (Macclesfield, Lab) and Cllr Mike Sewart (Poynton & Adlington Con).

In the end, it was backed by all 69 councillors present, of all political colours.

After the vote council leader Nick Mannion (Macclesfield, Lab) assured councillors and the public: "The deputy leader and myself will be writing in accordance with what we've agreed today unanimously, and that letter will go as a matter of urgency."

A decision on whether the site will proceed to the next stage is expected from the government next year.
