Two children have been questioned by police about the fire at a disused mansion on Beech Lane in Tytherington.

A 12-year-old girl and a 15-year-old boy, both from Macclesfield, voluntarily attended the police station to answer questions about the fire which police believe was started deliberately.

A police spokesperson confirmed that the pair have been released pending further enquiries.

Cheshire Fire and Rescue were alerted to the large fire at around 7pm on Wednesday with crews tackling the blaze throughout the night and into yesterday afternoon.

Crews were in attendance at the scene for 20 hours with a total of 11 fire engines from across the region needed over the course of the incident.

The fire caused significant damage to the disused mansion with some areas left too unsafe for crews to enter. No one was injured as a result of the blaze.

Arrangements were made for a structural surveyor and the owner of the building to come to the site to secure the building and determined what action needs to be taken and is now in the hands of the building owner.

People have been told to stay away from the building due to safety concerns.

Police said enquiries into the fire are ongoing.

Anyone with any information about the incident should call Cheshire Constabulary on 101, quoting IML 772604, or give the details via the police website.
