The headteacher at Tytherington School in Macclesfield has praised his pupils on their A-level results during a "very anxious" time for them.

The secondary school achieved what Manny Botwe called a "solid set of results", but noted that some pupils had their predicted grades downgraded during the national moderation process following the cancellation of exams.

Mr Botwe told Macclesfield Nub News: "Most of the students are happy with the grades and feel that it reflected their hard work, but we've also got a small proportion who have been really affected by the grade movements."

He said the school will be assisting those students who did not get the grades they were predicted through the appeals process.

The headteacher appealed for "absolute clarity" from the government as to what the next steps are regarding any appeals and how it will work following last minute changes on how mock exams will factor into the process.

Despite uncertainty for some, many Tytherington students will be able to move on to their university of choice.

A number of students achieved three or more A*/A/Distinction grades.

Mr Botwe said: "I would like to take this opportunity to formally congratulate them on their exceptional achievement."

The Tytherington students to achieve these grades are as follows:

  • Jakob Comber A*,A*,A*
  • Harriet Terrington A*,A, A, A
  • Ellen Marchetti A*,A*,A*
  • Rachel Cox A*,A*,A
  • Victoria Wilson A*,A*,A
  • Katherine Dane A*,A ,A
  • Holly Brockbank A*,A, A
  • Evie Brooks A,A,A
  • Luke Wood A*, Dist*, A
  • Connie Tobin A, A, A
  • Libby Ferris Dist*, Dist* Dist

Several students also achieved two A*/A/Distinction grades: Casey Holiday, Mia Nemesis, Rebecca Purves, Joanna Stephen, Brandon Roberts and Sam Rainford.

Mr Botwe also referenced that behind the headline figures, there are many individual success stories from the school.

Among these success stories are Katie Hill and Victoria Wilson who achieved the highest value added scores in the sixth form.

Katie will go on to read Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American studies at the University of Manchester and Victoria will read History and English at the University of Birmingham.

Of course, university is not the destination of choice for everyone receiving their results today. Many students went through the difficulty of securing apprenticeships during the lockdown.

Holly Brockbank was prepped and ready for her first interview, which was scheduled for the day when it was announced that schools were to close.

She was successful in her rescheduled virtual interview process and has now declined an offer to read Physics with Theoretical Physics at the University of Manchester after securing a competitive degree apprenticeship in Finance and Commercial Accountancy with Siemens.

Rob Rowson and George Scott decided to stay closer to home after gaining apprenticeships with pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca.

"We are incredibly proud of the achievements of all our students at Sixth Form. This has been a very turbulent period and it has been great to see so many students collect their results today," Mr Botwe said.

He added: "Whilst we are delighted that so many students have achieved well this year, what matters to us most is that the youngsters leave here as A* people with a real desire to make a positive difference to the world, particularly during these extraordinary times."
