Unlikely Macclesfield will apply for city status
The Mayor of Macclesfield has weighed in on the possibility of making Macclesfield become a city.
For the Queen's Platinum Jubilee, towns across the country are hoping that they will be selected by Her Majesty to become a city.
While Southend-on-Sea is confirmed to become a city, following the killing of the late MP Sir David Amess, there are still more new cities for 2022 to be confirmed.
Despite his love for our town, the current Mayor of Macclesfield has hinted at ruling out a city bid.
Cllr David Edwardes hopes money could be better spent elsewhere in our town, than on a potentially unsuccessful city bid.
"The average cost of a "city" bid in 2012 was £10,000. Preston spent £30,000 in 2002," said David.
"Three new cities will be created next year for the Queen's Jubilee and already more than 25 towns have thrown their hat in the ring.
"That means that 22 towns will be unsuccessful in their bids.
"Macclesfield is already way down the road of regenerating the town with new shops and businesses opening weekly.
"We can find far more productive ways of spending 10 grand than on a vanity project which might well fail."
Towns that have launched a city bid include nearby Crewe and Wrexham.
Other towns from further afar in the UK hoping to become a city include Doncaster and Middlesborough.
The Queen will also be creating new Lord Mayors for her Platinum Jubilee, which will lead to an extra Bank Holiday in June.
