Update on closure of footbridge which provides 'important pedestrian link' for local residents
By Matthew Hancock-Bruce 20th Mar 2026
Work is progressing to install a new bridge on a key pedestrian and cyclist route.
Black Lane footbridge, which connects Hurdsfield with Middlewood Way and the Hibel Road Tesco superstore, has been shut for several months.
Cheshire East Council has confirmed that inspections have now taken place, with 'full-depth cracking' found in the concrete deck.
The recent budget approved by the council includes funds to deliver a new footbridge.
Councillor Mark Goldsmith, chair of Cheshire East Council's highways and transport committee, said: "The council is progressing plans for works on the footbridge on Black Lane in Macclesfield, which provides an important pedestrian link for the local community.
"Following inspections and ongoing assessments, we can confirm that budget has been allocated within the 2026/2027 highways programme, which will enable works to be carried out on the bridge.
"We will now be moving forward with the next stage to deliver a new footbridge, which will include collaborative works with utility providers.
"The works will focus on ensuring the footbridge remains safe, resilient and fit for purpose. Further details on the works and timescales will be shared once designs are finalised and will be available to view on the Black Lane webpage.
"Access from Black Lane to the Middlewood Way footpath is still available via the bridge to the south.
"We will continue to keep residents informed as the project progresses and thank the community for their patience."
