Thieves have been targeting charity boxes in Macclesfield.

Cheshire Police have issued a warning after receiving reports of two individuals targeting charity collection boxes.

It is understood that one of the suspects actually stole from an establishment that had been giving him free food to help him out.

As part of Safer Business Action Week, police will be in Macclesfield town centre working with businesses and to tackle retail crime such as this.

Officers have also offered advice to ensure the safety of charity boxes and prevent theft.

"By implementing these safety measures, you can help protect your charity box and the funds raised for your cause," said a spokesperson for the force.

Advice to protect charity boxes

  • Install security features: Use security shutters, alarms, and CCTV cameras to deter potential thieves. Ensure that your shop layout is designed to minimize the risk of theft, such as using mirrors and bright lighting to make secluded areas more visible.
  • Use theft deterrent equipment: Incorporate anti-theft clothes tags or security casing on valuable items to make them less appealing to thieves.
  • Secure cash handling: Follow proper cash handling procedures, such as collecting, counting, storing, transporting, banking, and recording cash in a secure environment. Ensure that all cash is stored securely until it is banked.
  • Educate staff and volunteers: Provide training on fraud prevention measures and ensure that all staff and volunteers understand the importance of protecting the charity's funds.
  • Regularly review security measures: Regularly assess and update your security measures to adapt to new threats and improve overall safety.
