Cricket club looks to meet rising demand with new padel courts
By Matthew Hancock-Bruce 26th Jan 2026
Padel could be coming to Macclesfield Cricket Club.
The club on Victoria Road has applied to Cheshire East Council for permission to install four padel courts.
A planning statement submitted by Smashbox Architecture Limited claims that such a development will help meet the rising demand for the sport.
However, it should be noted that the statement repeatedly suggests that Macclesfield Cricket Club is located in Stoke-on-Trent.
It reads: "This proposal for four padel courts within the grounds of Macclesfield Cricket Club presents a sustainable, well considered enhancement to existing sports facilities in Stoke-on-Trent.
"The development will deliver community health and recreation benefits, while having minimal impact on visual amenity, ecology, or neighbouring uses."
The statement adds: "The aim is to provide high-quality, accessible sports facilities to meet the rising local demand for padel, a growing sport across the UK and locally in Cheshire."

The proposed padel courts will be installed on an unused grassed area next to the clubhouse.
This space had previously accommodated three tennis courts.
Each padel court will measure approximately 10x20m and be enclosed with a canopy and glaze or mesh fencing.
They will also feature 6m-high energy efficient LED lighting columns.
The application was validated by Cheshire East Council on Monday, January 19, and the public consultation ends on Wednesday, February 18.
To view the plans, visit the council's planning portal and search for the application reference number 25/4814/FUL.
