Club founder Rob Smethurst returns to chairman duties at Macclesfield FC
By Matthew Hancock-Bruce 27th Jan 2026
Macclesfield FC founder Rob Smethurst has resumed the role of chairman following nearly four months away.
Smethurst stepped down from the position at the end of September, explaining that he had other business commitments to attend to.
However, with the Silkmen enjoying their most successful period ever, including a shock FA Cup run, he has decided now is the time to return and serve as 'the face of the club'.
A statement on the club's website reads: "In recent weeks, the club has seen a significant increase in media interest, reflecting the progress being made on and off the pitch.
"With that heightened profile comes the need for a clear figurehead to represent the club and lead its external communications.
"As the founder and driving force behind Macclesfield FC's rebirth, Rob is uniquely placed to fulfil that role. He has therefore agreed to step back into the chairmanship to act as the public face of the club, providing leadership, continuity, and a clear point of accountability.
"Rob is working on some major media opportunities that will greatly benefit the club in the coming months and years."

The Macclesfield FC board has also confirmed a number of structural changes to strengthen the club's leadership team.
Jonathan Bull will formally move into the role of sporting director, working closely with Jimmy Holmes, the head of recruitment.
The senior management will be strengthened with the formal appointment of Dan Stuttard, who has been supporting the club's general operations for many months.
The statement released on Tuesday morning, January 27, adds: "These changes have the full support of the board, who remain collectively committed to responsible governance, financial sustainability, and the long-term success of Macclesfield FC."
