Macclesfield FC have paid tribute to an 'iconic' supporter.

The Silkmen have announced the death of longtime fan, Bill Milligan.

A tribute released by the club reads: "Matchdays will unquestionably feel a little quieter without Bill going forward, but his legacy will live on in so many ways.

"Our deepest thoughts and prayers are with Margaret, Bill's family, and the wealth of people who proudly called him a friend.

"Rest in Peace, Bill – you may have vacated your seat for now, but your undoubted legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of us all."

Born in 1936, Bill's love affair with Macclesfield began over six decades ago, with the Northern Irishman relocating to the town in 1965 to embark on a career working for ICI.

He first became a Silkmen season ticket holder ahead of the club's historic 1986/87 treble-winning season, also attending the majority of away matches with the Moose Tours.

However, Bill's connection with Macclesfield Town extends far beyond the terrace.

"As a founding member of the Silkmen Supporters' Trust, Bill routinely went above and beyond the call of duty, dedicating his time and energy to the club he loved so dearly," the tribute adds.

"Together with his devoted wife Margaret, Bill opened his heart and his home to support the future of our Club.

"For years, they provided digs and a welcoming family environment for young Silkmen players as they found their footing – including Pedro Matias, Mike Bamber, Michael Briscoe, Jonny Brain, Vinnie Mukendi, Scott Barrow, and Tony Diagne.

"To these players, Bill was far more than a fan; he was a mentor and perhaps more importantly, a friendly face in a new town.

"The profound impact of those acts of pure kindness can never be overestimated.

"It therefore comes as no surprise that Bill's infectious personality, sharp wit, and undeniable love for his club have helped inspire generations of fans to follow in his footsteps."
