A teenager who broke his neck while playing rugby is hoping to go to the Six Nations.

Cian McNamara suffered a broken neck following an accident while playing for his team, Macclesfield Rugby Colts.

The 16-year-old Fallibroome Academy pupil may never play again but is hoping to go and watch England play at Twickenham next month.

Cian's mother, Gemma Hamilton, said: "The surgeon said that in 20 years he had never seen a fracture like Cian's.

"He's lucky that he can still walk and move his body."

She added: "Doctors have advised Cian to stay away (from rugby).

"Your bones never heal properly once they've broken, you're always going to have that weak spot.

"At first with the adrenaline pumping he was saying 'I'll be back' but once he'd been to hospital and had a chance to digest it all he decided it's probably best he doesn't play again."

It was a love of tag rugby at primary school that first got Cian interested in the sport.

On Sunday, February 9, he was playing for Macclesfield Rugby's Colts XV against Sandbach RUFC.

During a ruck towards the end of the game, Cian went for a 'jackal' turnover which resulted in players piling on top of him, snapping his neck.

When Cian got up he realised he couldn't lift his head and had lost all feeling in his left arm.

Gemma, who was at home with her youngest, recalled the moment she found out what had happened.

"It didn't seem real," she said.

"I was thinking he's probably just hurt his neck.

"I rushed down there and as soon as I arrived I realised this was more than just a sprain."

Cian spent several days in hospital following the accident, undergoing various scans and being fitted with a halo vest which he will have to wear for eight weeks.

To help make his recovery journey a little easier, Gemma is hoping to raise enough money to take him to see England play in the Six Nations.

"It would be amazing," she said.

"However, the tickets are not cheap.

"If we could get him to a game he would just be over the moon!"

A GoFundMe has been set up for Cian which can be viewed at www.gofundme.com/f/help-cian-see-the-six-nations
