Nobody takes much notice of Frances; she is on the outside, her face pressed to the window looking in. But one cold evening, everything changes. Driving on a remote country road she comes across an overturned car crumpled on the side of the road and waits with the driver, Alys. When Alys' famous family later contacts Frances, she finds herself drawn for the first time into the world on the other side of the window.
