Bollington SciBar: Understanding physical activity before and after a knee replacement using wearable and smartphone technology
Vale Inn, Adlington Road, Bollington SK10 5JT
Saturday 19th April

SciBar is science in a bar - an invited speaker gives a talk on a scientific topic while people enjoy a drink or meal, with a Q&A afterwards. Bollington SciBar takes place monthly at the Vale Inn in Bollington.
The speaker in April is Ayobami Olanrewaju, 3rd year PhD student at the University of Manchester.
It's unclear how people's physical activity recovers after having a knee replacement, yet approximately 100,000 surgeries of this type are performed a year in the UK. This lack of clarity limits how well doctors can prepare patients for a knee replacement and leaves patients wondering how their activities will recover over time. For example, patients may wonder if they can run to catch a bus or how long they can wait in lines when taking a flight. Even though asking people to self-report their activities may provide some answers, this approach will be highly error-prone and burdensome because people will have to recall all their activities meticulously. Wearables and smartphone technology are another option. These technologies are already integrated into our daily lives, and can allow data to be collected seamlessly and frequently with a lesser burden on people.
In this SciBar talk, I will discuss our approach to using wearables and smartphone technology to understand physical activity recovery in a study called PAPrKA (Physical Activity Patterns after Knee Arthroplasty), strategies for recruiting for the study and the foreseeable challenges and how we will tackle them.
No charge, all welcome. Vale Inn, Bollington, talk begins promptly at 6.30pm.
