There is good news for sustainability in our town, as the Macclesfield Repair Cafe has found a bigger and better home, just months after launching.

The 'fix it' revolution is taking off in Macclesfield, as The Repair Cafe have moved into their new home at Duke St Community Centre.

It is there where a talented team of voluntary experts make your faulty or tired appliance / toy / bike / garment good as new again. And of course, there is tea and cake.

The monthly sessions, which will next be held on February 12 2022, could move into their new home thanks to a crowdfunder, which Macclesfield Nub News reported on last October.

They raised £1,507 to move to a larger home on Duke Street. The first five Repair Cafe sessions took place at the Old Sunday School on Roe Street, for which the team are extremely grateful for, but now the sustainability champions can continue their expansion at this new venue.

Repairing objects is better for the environment as it prevents new items from being created, which takes energy and uses non-renewable resources such as plastic.

The SK11 6UR public building, also known as Macclesfield Senior Citizens Hall, is owned by Cheshire East Council, but now hired by this Macclesfield good cause.

Macc Repair Cafe's Theresa Lingg who is part of the co-ordination team spoke glowingly of the new space.

"The facilities at the Senior Citizens Hall are fantastic, including a generous kitchen area and enough seating and surface area for us to expand," Theresa said.

"We are even more accessible due to the extended parking area [Duke Street Car Park] and dedicated disabled access, and are excited to welcome even more visitors than before.

"The Senior Citizens Hall members have been incredibly forthcoming and we look forward to working with them.

"Despite the kindness of the Senior Citizens Hall, we would not be able to afford regularly renting this space without the support of everybody that has donated to us! So thank you to anyone who donated.

"We are incredibly lucky in that the demand and interest in our cafe has been so big over the last couple of sessions, that we would like to have the option to add more volunteers to our team while also creating a comfortable and cosy coffee area for visitors waiting for a repair slot or simply to socialise.

"We simply didn't have enough space at the old site and we are excited to see what the future holds for the Repaircafe!

"We were so lucky in that we had such a breadth of expertise and tools right from the beginning: From fixing tiny clock mechanisms and mending precious textiles, to glueing vintage furniture and fixing printers - there is hardly anything that we wouldn't have a look at.

"As part of our first Repaircafe on the new site, we are inviting people to join us in sewing bunting for the space. If you are new to sewing or you just fancy having a crafty morning, feel free to join us! Scrap fabric and plenty of tea will be provided."
