A Macclesfield pub is bringing a piece of Hollywood to our town, with the return of their much-loved cinema nights.

Pubs in Macclesfield - and across the country can - struggle to get the punters in on a Sunday or Thursday evening, being either end of the weekend.

However, an out-of-the-box idea from the cosy and quirky pub in the heart of Macclesfield is hosting must-see events on those days for their their customers.

The Park Tavern, already imbued with alternative spirit with their alternative selection of local beers and ales, are deciding to show cult films every Sunday evening at 8pm, and international movies at the same time every Thursday.

This week will mark the blockbuster return of the 'Pictures in the Park' cinema nights, an event which hasn't been held since February 2019. Here's the line-up for every Thursday..

The upcoming blockbusters to be shown include's Jack Black's breakthrough movie High Fidelity, and kicks-off with Cannes Film Festival Winner Portrait of a Lady on Fire.

The 2019 French film will be shown on Thursday February 3 from 8pm. All films are free to watch, just come in, buy a drink and enjoy the 'Pictures in the Park'.

Assistant Manager Issy Allison first attended the cinema nights as a punter, and how works for The Park Tavern.

"I like that the films we show are slightly more obscure," she said.

Macclesfield: Did you know The Park Tavern has a 29-seat cinema?

"They are films that can't really be sourced on Netflix or Amazon Prime. They're not readily available to access from home.

"If you love cask beer and independent films, it is the perfect place.

"Have a pint, take it upstairs and enjoy. And on Thursday, we have Burger Nights for special offers on something to eat as well."

The Park Tavern is located on 158 Park Lane.

Sunday will also see a collection of cult films being screened upstairs at the Macclesfield pub.

The Bollington Brewing Company-associated pub didn't feel comfortable filling up the 29-seat cinema room during the heights of the pandemic, but have returned the much-loved film nights along with a series of other events.

"We've been running cinema nights for ten years and they have been popular," said Lee Wainwright, owner of Bollington Brewing Company.

"Thursday nights are international film and world cinema, and that is held every week.

"And every other Sunday we have alternative films and cult classics.

Macclesfield: Have you ever been to the Park Tavern's 'Pictures in the Park'?

"In a couple of months time we're also going to start Cinevangelist, where we publish a bit of information online about the film, but you don't know what the film actually is until you turn up. It is a really popular and a great surprise."

As well as adding to the pubs already packed events calendar, which includes a science talk and pub quizzes, the movie nights are to encourage people to visit their local cinemas, after the pandemic changed our relationship with flicks.

"They're always really good films that we show," Lee added.

"Part of this is about getting back to normality and encouraging people to go to the cinema again."

You can pop into The Park Tavern to get a programme, and even purchase some locally-brewed beers to take away.

While we have posted the films in the coming weeks as images in this article, you can keep up to date with the schedule by following The Park Tavern on Facebook or Instagram.

Alternatively, you can always pop-in for a pint and grab a programme. The listings for that week will also be visible on a blackboard at the pub's entrance.

As well as their food menu, salted snacks are also available to buy with the free flicks.

After purchasing The Vale Inn in Bollington in 2005, Bollington Brewing Company made their first brew in 2008. And would take over the Park Tavern in April 2011, introducing the cinema nights shortly after.

The Park Tavern is managed by the same company who opened The Fountain on Macclesfield's Park Green last October.

The pub can seat up to 135, and has two function rooms, one of which is the cinema.

Making it a unique and memorable setting for private parties and functions. The pub can cater to all things from business meetings to family movie nights, birthday parties, book clubs and anything inbetween. Just contact them for further details.

The pub recently hired new manager Nichola Stevenson. And now they are looking for more staff.
