'A real privilege' - Macclesfield headteacher to return to top educational role
By Matthew Hancock-Bruce 15th Jul 2026
A Macclesfield headteacher has been appointed to one of the top educational positions in the country.
Tytherington School has announced that headteacher Manny Botwe will serve as acting president of the Association of School and College Leaders (ASCL) from September 2026.
Mr Botwe, who previously served as ASCL President during 2024/25, has been asked by ASCL executive to return to the presidential role for the forthcoming academic year to provide leadership and continuity for the association.
In the association's 150-year history, this is only the second time that a former president has returned to serve in this capacity, making it an 'exceptionally rare' appointment.
Mr Botwe said: "It is a real privilege to once again serve ASCL and represent school and college leaders across the country.
"I was pleased to be able to step forward and support the association, and I look forward to working closely with the general secretary, the presidential team and colleagues across the profession to ensure that school and college leaders continue to have a strong and constructive voice."
ASCL is one of the UK's leading professional associations and trade unions for school and college leaders, representing more than 25,000 members across the UK.
As acting president, Mr Botwe will once again represent members nationally, working closely with government ministers, Ofsted and other key education organisations to influence policy and champion the interests of schools, colleges and the young people they serve.
He added: "Schools continue to face significant challenges, from SEND and funding pressures to recruitment and accountability reform.
"I look forward to working constructively with government and partners across education to help shape policies that support both the profession and the children and young people we serve."
During his first presidency, Mr Botwe's theme, 'A Brighter Future', focused on improving opportunities for all young people, tackling educational disadvantage, addressing the SEND crisis and ensuring that every child has access to a high-quality education.
Reflecting on his return to the role, Mr Botwe said: "It remains a tremendous privilege to lead Tytherington School while also representing school and college leaders nationally.
"I am grateful to our governors, staff, students and wider school community for their continued support, which enables me to undertake this work on behalf of the profession."
One of the co-chairs of governors, Trevor Langston, added: "Tytherington School is proud that our headteacher will once again play a leading role in representing school and college leaders across the UK while continuing to lead the school and its community."
