Allowances for every Cheshire East Councillor has been published, including those from Macclesfield.

Councillors receive a basic allowance, and those who sit on special committees can get funds from a separate pot called special responsibility allowance.

There are also opportunities to claim for dependants' carers' allowances, travel and subsistence and co-optees' allowances.

Councillors narrowly voted to increase the basic allowance in recent years.

And on Wednesday, Cheshire East Council published the latest figures.

Across the full council, across all allowance opportunities, £1.32 million was given out by the council over the most recent full financial year.

Cheshire East Council said: "Cheshire East Council has published details of the allowances paid to elected members of the council. The figures published cover the financial year, from 1 April 2023 to 31 March 2024.

"They include the basic allowance, the special responsibility allowance, dependants' carers' allowances, travel and subsistence and co-optees' allowances.

"These allowances represent a reimbursement for the time and personal costs incurred by elected members while carrying out their responsibilities on behalf of the council and the people of Cheshire East.

"Cheshire East is a large unitary authority, with 82 elected members, and the total cost of allowances is proportionate and in line with most other unitary authorities in England."

This year has a higher number of people on the document than last.

This is because Cheshire East Council had elections during the last financial year (in May 2023, one year after the aforementioned period began).

This means that the document includes both councillors that stood down or were not re-elected in May 2023, and ones that were elected.

We have denoted those councillors that were inactive beyond May 2023 (AKA not representing Macclesfield from then, in ITALICS).

BOLD denotes a councillor resigned before their term ended.

So current serving local Cheshire East Councillors are not italicised.

In some instances, the basic allowance is slightly lower for councillors that were elected in May 2023, as they were not serving at the start of the financial year in April 2023.
