The ground floor of a Macclesfield commercial building could be turned into accommodation.

Part of Oxford House, on Oxford Road, could become a new one-bedroom apartment according to Cheshire East Council.

Mr Jamie Martin of Cheadle Hulme firm Barkley Ventures Limited has applied to Cheshire East Council for a "change of use from an existing commercial unit to a single one bed apartment."

Hamer Way Architects of Sunderland Street have been consulted as agents for the project.

The single apartment concerns 419.793 square feet, and was last used as an office in April 2021 (after the third and final COVID-19 lockdown where many began to work from home).

It is not the only office in the building that could become a home.

The building has housed numerous businesses in their offices over the years, from financial planners to start-ups. But a full residential project is envisioned for the former 19th century silk mill, with approval already been given on other floors to turn old offices into 21 apartments, according to a planning document.

And now, one more could be added to the list with a choice on this 22nd flat set to be considered this month.

It is not all bad news for the local economy, as business shall continue with nearby companies including a pub and the Cottage Street Garage, both of which will benefit from the new flats.

Regarding the new single extra application, no extra parking space will be created if approved. However, 21 parking spaces have already been approved for the other apartments that already got the go-ahead.

There will be bike storage and an electric bike charger for residents to use. But unlike with parking, one extra space for a cyclists will be created if this new planning application goes ahead.

A final decision on the ground floor dwelling will be made by January 23.

The applicants describe the complex as a whole as "a sustainable location for a residential development".
