The opening of Macclesfield's new Middle Eastern 'mini mall' is fast approaching.

Cheshire East Council has formally approved plans to convert the old Lloyds bank building on Mill Street.

It is expected to open as Saffron Mall in the New Year, bringing several businesses together under one roof.

The man behind the plans, Ali Ghanbari, is moving his existing company, Tailor Mayde For You, from across the road into the former bank.

It will be joined on the ground floor by a café and wine bar with a dining area, a fast food kitchen, and a Middle Eastern grocery and gift shop.

Meanwhile, the first floor will be transformed into a private function room/event hall.

Speaking earlier this year, Mr Ghanbari said: "I have been in Macclesfield town centre for over 17 years now and I have seen how businesses are adapting to their challenging demands, and based upon this, we are relocating to this property and feel very optimistic and excited to offer our services to our local residents and visitors.

"I believe Saffron Mall could be the missing golden jewel of this corner of the town."

Over the summer, Mr Ghanbari applied to Cheshire East Council for a certificate of lawful use for conversion of existing Class E(c) bank to use as Class E(b) café or restaurant.

On Wednesday, December 10, the council formally greenlit the plans.

A report prepared by case officer Joshua Lyon outlining the decision reads: "There is no conditions on the original permission limiting the use to bank or financial use only.

"As such, the proposed change of use is deemed acceptable and a positive certificate is recommended."

Signs for Saffron Mall are already in place.

While an official opening date has not yet been confirmed, it is expected to open in early January.
