Crowdfunder to take Macclesfield Repair Café to the next level

There is great news for sustainability in Macclesfield, as the newly-formed Repair Café have launched a crowdfunder.
After a successful start to the first two sessions on September 11 and October 9, the group are seeking to expand through public donations.
The eco-friendly service takes part in the Old Sunday School part of Macclesfield's Heritage Centre, on Roe Street.
Their space is currently in indoor reception area in front of the entrance to plastic-free store Scoop and Scales.
The sustainability group want to secure their own future, after being helped out by the Macclesfield community in starting up.
Theresa Lingg part of the co-ordination team at the Repair Café met with Macclesfield Nub News and had this to say.
"We've been massively supported by Scoop and Scales so far with things like basic rent and make sure we can get up and running," said Theresa.
"However, we would like to be able to stand on our own two feet. So we have launched a crowdfunding campaign for the most essential things like rent and liability insurance [for breakages].
"People already give donations who visit on the day, which covers expenses for each volunteer for what they bring and share. But this way [through fundraising] we can make sure this is a project that will actually last.
The committee would also like to afford their own tables and chairs.
They are currently getting huge support from St Peter's Church, Macclesfield on Windmill Street who have donated their own furniture to use at each monthly Repair Café, but this is a cumbersome 0.7 mile walk away.
A crowdfunder would also allow them to buy their own used furniture to keep at the Heritage Centre ahead of each session.
"The response from the community has exceeded our expectations. We have been busy non-stop with repairs in both sessions and the feedback has been really great," added Theresa.
"The overall atmosphere between the volunteers has been great as well - because not everybody knew each other before. We have a great working atmosphere."
Theresa, who has lived in Macc for a year and works for a software company by trade, is one of three who have organised the crowdfunder for the Repair Café, which can aims to raise up to £1,332.
Household appliances like kettles, toasters or electronic devices are the most common repairs, which are particularly beneficial for the environment in repairing as they use valuable metals.
Preventing more raw materials being mined and made into new products reduces ones carbon footprint.
The opening of Macc's repair hub comes with the Right to Repair movement becoming law in the UK, which legally requires manufacturers of goods to make spare parts available to consumers and third-parties.
"I would just like to say thank you to our 28 amazing volunteers and four co-ordinators," concluded Theresa.
"Nobody is getting paid for it, we are all doing it for a passion for the cause, and without you it could not work. It is all thanks to our Macclesfield community spirit."

The final date for 2021 will be on December 11, where repairing a broken loved item could make a perfect gift for Christmas. Dates for 2022 are currently unconfirmed.
