A pub in a residential area of Macclesfield is going to be put up for sale.

The Wharf on Brook Street is currently ran by Macclesfield resident Chris Stairmand.

Under his stewardship, the pub has become known for supporting independent music artists and great ales.

He posted the news on Facebook on Sunday afternoon.

"The Wharf has been here, on this corner of Brook Street, for about 180 years, the last 12 under my stewardship. When I bought it it was closed, steel over the windows, in a state of disrepair, and nursing a terrible reputation," he said.

"With hard work, great staff, the help of family and friends, and the continued support of a whole community, it has become more than a well-respected pub, it's become a hub to a community, and a home for me and the children."

"We have had musical entertainment from all over the world and have earned a good following of gig-goers and musicians alike.

"We've sourced amazing beers, hosted tastings and beer launches, and earned many awards and accolades from CAMRA.

"We made a pub that we can all be proud of.

"But, it hasn't been without cost.

"The financial challenges that everyone is seeing first hand, is hitting me and the business hard.

"Beer costs are rising at an unprecedented rate, along with other costs like insurance, fuels, etc. I know you are all feeling the pinch too, and with that are reducing your spend.

"I will be putting The Wharf up for sale and instructing an agent soon.

"I would love to see The Wharf continue as the community pub we all love, but I'm a realist and know that it might not sell for that, but I can hope.

"We will be continuing as we've always done, and have great gigs booked through the winter. But, for now, thank you all for the support and I hope we can count on it going forward."

No listing for the sale has been posted as of yet, so the current value is not yet publicly available.

The news comes just days after the pub made the CAMRA Good Beer Guide for 2024.
