The final phase of Macclesfield station's £2 million redevelopment is set to get underway.

Avanti West Coast has confirmed that work to upgrade the main station building will begin later this week.

The project is designed to enhance the customer experience and create a welcoming gateway to the town for those travelling by rail.

Dean Duthie, engineering and infrastructure director at Avanti West Coast, said: "This investment is part of our commitment to offer the best possible experience to our customers.

"The redevelopment will make the station a more welcoming environment and an improved gateway to Macclesfield – a town we're proud to serve.

"We recognise the work taking place will mean reduced facilities for customers using the station and would like to thank them for their patience and understanding. As always, our station team will be on hand to help with any queries."

This final phase of the station redevelopment will see the creation of a modern, spacious station entrance with an upgraded ticket office, new waiting room, and toilets, including an accessible toilet, as well as a new retail unit.

All of these facilities will be located within the same footprint as the existing station building on platform one.

The work, which is due to be completed in spring 2026, follows the installation of new bike storage, which came into use last month.

In addition, Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology will be introduced at the station car park.

Avanti say this will save motorists time when entering and exiting, where car park barriers are currently in place, and remove the hassle of having to pay for parking after travelling by train.

More payment options will also be available for parking, including card, Google Wallet, Apple Pay and cash, which can be done before or after a train journey.

While the work takes place, the main station building will be closed with reduced facilities.

Alternative ticket retailing will be available, and temporary toilets will be in place on platform one.

The station will also be cashless and only accept card payments.

As such, customers travelling to or from Macclesfield during this time are advised to buy their tickets online, where possible.
