A fundraiser has been set up following a suspected arson attack at a Macclesfield park.

The lending library at Lyme Green Park was 'completely destroyed' in a fire on Tuesday evening, November 3.

It is not the first time the community initiative has been targeted, with teenagers previously accused of vandalising the site.

Following this latest incident, local resident Elliot Smith has launched a fundraiser to help rebuild the library.

He said: "It's really upsetting to see something that was there for everyone in the community destroyed like this, particularly as it's not the first time the library has been targeted.

"The library itself, along with all the books inside, has been completely destroyed.

"It was such a lovely little addition to the park and it's difficult to understand why anyone would want to do this.

"We've set up a fundraiser to hopefully replace the library and the books that were lost, with all proceeds going to Park4All Lyme Green, the registered charity behind the park improvements."

Flames were first seen coming from the community library at around 7.30pm on Tuesday evening.

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service sent two engines, one each from the Macclesfield and Bollington stations, to the scene.

A CFRS spokesperson said: "Firefighters were called to a fire in a shed in Macclesfield.

"The fire was out on arrival, and a water backpack was used to dampen down the area.

"A thermal imaging camera was used to check for hotspots."

Anyone who may have seen what happened or who has CCTV footage is asked to contact Park4All by emailing [email protected].
