Macclesfield: It may come as a surprise to know that Cheshire has its own celebratory day.

While first established over eight centuries ago, the tradition faded into obscurity before being revived last year.

Cheshire Day is held on March 30, which this year, will be a Wednesday.

Macclesfield businesses and individuals are encouraged to take part, to celebrate what makes our county great.

The campaign is organised by the Visit Chester & Cheshire board, and the theme this year is 'Our Family Welcomes your family'. So the glorious independent shops of Macclesfield are invited to promote and share their families valued on this date.

Here is a short guide on how you can honour our county on the day and boost the local economy.

  1. Create a Special Offer
Creating a flash sale or special discount for Cheshire Day can boost your business' name across the county and beyond. Whether it is a five per cent discount on all Cheshire-made products, or a restaurant offering a discount for the day, companies are encouraged to get creative for our county!
  1. Create a Special Product

Whether you are a brewer or baker, Cheshire businesses could sell a limited edition product which celebrates our county. Maybe you could sell a cake in the shape of a wheat sheaf (our county's key iconography). We only mention a brewer as an example as 'Cheshire Day IPA' has such a great ring to it...

  1. Host a Cheshire Day Event
Why not invite a local talent to your business, or host a special Cheshire Day quiz night? Hosting an event at your business on March 30 will make it a day to remember. You could also attract visitors from outside of Macclesfield by honouring the special day with a special event. If you are hosting one, don't forget to Nub it and promote it on the Macclesfield Nub News Events section.
  1. Host a Cheshire Day Giveaway

Contests always do amazing for businesses on social media. You could ask social media followers to share and like a post, to be in with a chance of winning a top prize, and announce the winner on Cheshire Day. It will increase your likes and awareness of your business, while giving a positive association with your name.

And those are just some of the ideas this journalist could come up with!

A spokesperson for Cheshire Day explained the history of the date and the significance of this year's event.

"On 30 March 1300, two days after the formal reissue of Magna Carta for what would be the last time, King Edward I confirmed a charter of liberties for Cheshire. Effectively giving Cheshire its own Magna Carta," they said.

"We decided to celebrate this historic moment with Cheshire Day. Cheshire Day is a multi-organisational and multi- channel initiative with the primary goal of raising the profile of Cheshire as a place to stay, work and play.

"Led by Marketing Cheshire, the day is an opportunity to promote everything local in Cheshire to both local and national audiences. We aim to get as many businesses and residents involved as possible and encourage people to celebrate Cheshire by visiting, exploring and shopping locally.

"Cheshire Day 2021, despite being a solely digital initiative due to lockdown was a roaring success. Cheshire residents both past and present, fantastic Cheshire businesses and a whole host of people who have a special connection with our county went above and beyond to share digitally what they love about Cheshire.

"Social media was abuzz with #CheshireDay. Over 30,000 interactions were racked up as well as the hashtag reaching 14million people!

"This just goes to show how special Cheshire is to both those in Cheshire and around the world.

"This year, it is time to capitalise upon this significant engagement and turn it into in-person experiences whether this is shopping on local high streets, visiting Cheshire attractions, encouraging accommodation bookings, drinking and dining out in Cheshire or just about any way of experiencing Cheshire."
